Japanese papers from the washi city of Mino
with over 1000 years of tradition in paper production
for covering shoji, for lampshades, for handicrafts...
Our selected Mino papers are made from 100% natural fibers, without any addition of synthetic fibers. Although they are produced using modern methods, our Minowashi grades perfectly display the 1000-year-old aesthetics and outstanding technical properties of handmade Japanese papers.
Origin and philosophy
Minowashi papers come from the Japanese paper town of Mino in Gifu Prefecture in the center of Japan. Mino is located in a valley on the Nagara-gawa River and is known for its 1300-year tradition of producing the highest quality Japanese paper. Every year, the Japanese paper lamp competition (Mino-washi Akari Art Exhibition) takes place in the original old town with several hundred exhibitors. The paper manufacturers from Mino continue the tradition of handmade paper production using modern methods. Their goal has remained unchanged for 1300 years: to preserve and further develop the paper culture with the best materials, the cleanest water and the best technology and to produce the best possible Japanese paper.
Manufacture
Our Minowashi papers are produced on slow-running paper machines. We use particularly soft water from the source of the Itadori-gawa river.
The production technique is closely based on manual methods. Despite being produced by machine, the paper has hardly any recognizable grain direction and is therefore almost equally tear-resistant in all directions. Minowashi papers thus perfectly combine traditional aesthetics with the outstanding technical properties of handmade Japanese papers. Composition: These Mino Japanese papers are made from 100% long natural Manila hemp fibers, without any addition of pulp, plastics or other substances. The pure raw materials and the special spring water are decisive for the quality of the paper.
Properties and use
Due to the exclusive use of long hemp fibers, without the addition of pulp, Minowashi papers are considerably tougher and more tear-resistant than other similar papers. Because of their expressive fiber structure, the papers work particularly well on large surfaces - such as shoji frames or cupboard doors, as well as against the light - as lampshades or light objects. Their high tear resistance makes them particularly suitable for covering cupboard doors.
Minowashi papers are made from 100% plant fibres (Manila hemp). The raw material comes from natural cultivation without pesticides and fertilizers. As a fast-growing fiber plant, Manila hemp binds four times as much CO2 as deciduous trees. As a purely natural material, the paper can be disposed of as organic waste or composted.
