Washi Tatami Sheets

Washi Tatami Sheets are an eco-friendly Japanese paper material that can be used as upholstery fabric for furniture, wall coverings, and floor coverings. Tatami Sheets made from Japanese paper were developed as a durable and colorfast covering for tatami, the traditional Japanese floor mats.

Traditional tatami omote made from rush fabric (igusa) have been known for centuries as the top layer of Japanese tatami rice straw mats. These decorative mats made from breathable natural material characterize the aesthetics of Japanese rooms. However, classic tatami are sensitive to dirt and moisture and have limited abrasion resistance.

Thanks to their enhanced properties, Takumi’s Washi Tatami Sheets can also be used in other areas and for European applications, such as wall coverings or upholstery fabric. Paper cords are twisted from specially manufactured thin Japanese papers, dyed, impregnated, and woven into Tatami Sheets. The fabrics are abrasion-resistant, lightfast, and water-repellent. Visually, they are virtually indistinguishable from classic igusa mats.
